SERVICE
LEARNING HOURS GUIDELINES
The mission of the schools
in the Diocese of Oakland is to provide students with a quality education
rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, Catholic tradition, and service to
the community of faith. As Catholics, and as Christians, we believe people
have a right and a duty to participate in society, seeking together the
common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.
Working towards these goals, it is essential that students begin experiencing
how important it is to serve others, especially those less fortunate.
-
Each student in 7th and
8th grade at St. David School must complete a total of 5 hours per trimester
for a total of 15 hours service by the end of the school year.
-
At least 5 of the 15 total
hours should be spent working in the community. Examples include volunteering
in convalescent hospitals, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, working at
a daycare facility, or at a pet hospital.
-
If a student volunteers
in a parent's work place, another worker or a supervisor must sign the
form. Parents may not sign the form.
-
Hours may be earned through
altar serving, assisting with scouts, helping coach a sports team, and
teacher assisting after school.
-
A variety of service opportunities
are welcomed as long as they are consistent with the spirit of service
learning and the project is discussed with the teacher in advance.
